WINTER DRIVING TIPS
Preparation
Give yourself time to clear all of your windows and the ROOF of snow , you do not want an avalanche of snow down your windscreen when you brake.
Choose major roads which are more likely to have been cleared and gritted.
Use a cigarette lighter to heat up a key for a frozen lock.
When driving in ice and snow
Leave as much space as possible behind the car in front stopping distances can be increased by up to 10 times.
Pull away in 2nd gear, or change to 3rd gear if wheels still spinning, don't over rev the engine.
Try to keep to a constant speed travelling up hills and keep the car moving, try not to stop you could start sliding.
Use a low gear going downhill and keep your speed down, use you breaks gently.
If you get stuck, straighten the steering wheel try and clear the snow from under the wheels. Place something under your drive wheels to give the tyres some grip.
Vehicle electric's
Avoid using the heater fan, lights, rear screen heater and wipers any longer than you need to save battery life.
Turn the ignition key for short five-second bursts if the engine doesn't start quickly, leaving thirty seconds between attempts to allow the car battery to recover.
Antifreeze
Make sure your vehicle has antifreeze added to the cooling system and never mix different types of anti freeze, ( this should/may have been added on your last vehicle service)
You normally need a 50-50 mix of antifreeze and water in the cooling system for winter check the product packaging for details.
A continuous schreeching noise as soon as the engine is started is a sign the water pump is frozen up - the engine block could also be frozen. Stop the engine immediately and allow it to thaw.
Vision
Always ensure your windscreen is clean inside and out. Sun glare can be a real problem in the winter or summer.
Use your air conditioning for quicker demisting.
Check your windscreen wiper washer fluid is topped up.
